Best Sports Parks Near Lewisburg

Wolfe Field

If you’re looking for ball fields, Wolfe Field at St. Anthony Street Park has two softball fields and John Heinz Field at Fairground Road Park has a really nice baseball field.

There are basketball courts at Lewisburg Area Recreation Park and at Danny Greene Park. Tennis courts are also at Lewisburg Area Recreation Park. Picnic areas abound; they’re at all of the playgrounds if you’re looking for a spot for kids to burn off some energy, or for some more pleasant ambiance, there are tables at Soldiers Park by the river.

Best Playgrounds Near Lewisburg

Playgrounds are at Hufnagle Park, St Anthony Street Park, Danny Greene Park, Fairgound Road Park, and Lewisburg Area Recreation Park. Fairground Road Park’s playground is small, but there is a short walking path around a pond for the adults to occupy themselves while the children play. (The kids are never out of eyesight.) The other parks all have more extensive playgrounds, and I wish I was a kid again to take advantage of all the fun equipment!

Best Hiking and Boating Near Lewisburg

If you’re looking for a hike, there is a path along the river by the Lewisburg Boat Access. It goes through private property, so please be respectful. For a longer hike, the Dale Ridge Trail is about 2 miles through mostly wooded area. There is one very steep climb, and then it follows the ridgeline with several spectacular views of the valley. (They recently rerouted the trail, so I’m not sure if this is still accurate.)

The Lewisburg Boat Access provides boating access to the Susquehanna River. If you want to rent kayaks, there is an outfitter just across the river in Northumberland County. Lewisburg Area Recreation Park has a pool for swimming, and in the winter it has ice skating.

State Parks Near Lewisburg

If you want to go a little farther afield, there are a handfull of state parks within a short drive. Along the Susquehanna River there are Milton State Park just to the northeast of Lewisburg and Shikellamy State Park to the south. Milton State Park is and island with a hiking trail about a mile long that is popular with local runners, but be careful after a rain; the trails get really muddy and slippery. It also has soccer fields. It is a good place for birding during migration seasons. Shikellamy State Park has an overlook in Union County with pavilions and hiking and a marina in Northumberland County.

West of Lewisburg, three state parks are near each other in the forest near the Centre County border. Sand Bridge State Park is a small picnic area with a pavilion next to a stream. Raymond B. Winter State Park, known as “Halfway Dam” to Lewisburg locals, has a small lake for swimming and hiking trails that connect with Bald Eagle State Forest for longer hikes. Just across the border in Centre County is McCall Dam State Park. It is good for hunting, fishing, and picnicking. It is an out-of-the-way park with fewer people visiting. To get there, you have to take gravel state forest roads.

Zoos and Caves Near Lewisburg

One more gem worth mentioning is Clyde Peeling’s Reptileland in Allenwood, just north of Lewisburg. They’ve got tons of reptiles to observe, a dinosaur trail, and parakeets. This one you do have to pay for, though. All the other parks mentioned up to this point are free.

I should also mention the two caves in Centre County. It’s a bit of a drive to get there, but Woodward Cave and Penn’s Cave are both worth visiting. Penn’s Cave is a boat tour through the cave, and the wildlife park is the best in the area. You can also find wildlife at T&D Cats of the World, in Penns Creek to the southwest of Lewisburg.
