The land that is now Greenwood Furnace State Park was once owned by the  Iroquois Confederation. During the 1700s Scots-Irish, Amish, and Mennonite farmers moved into the area. In 1834 the furnace began blasting. At its peak in the 1880s Greenwood Furnace had about 300 employees. In 1904 the furnace shut down, and a ghost town remained.
From 1906 to 1993 the land was owned by the state, which operated a tree nursery there. In 1924 the state park was established.
