El Morro National Monument

a name with a church picture carved in 1866

El Morro National Monument is a wealth of history written on a canyon wall. Literally. There are hundreds of signatures etched in the canyon wall from pictographs to western settlers. The more recent ones are dated and go back hundreds of years.

Visitors are no longer permitted to add their names to the canyon, but when I was there, there was a rock outside the visitor center where you could carve your name.
