Archbald Pothole State Park, PA

Archbald Pothole State Park is a 150 acre park in the middle of a busy area. The park consists of the pothole (a giant sinkhole), a short trail, and some interpretive signs. Another park is located on the property, and it has athletic fields.

Sinkholes are common in areas with limestone bedrock, or karst topography. Limestone dissolves relatively easily, so when water flows underground it can erode the bedrock, and eventually the land above is no longer supported and caves in. Caves and sinkholes are often formed this way.

The pothole, while interesting, is not unique. When I was there, there were a few pieces of trash at the bottom, so it was not even photogenic.

The park is a nice place to take a stroll and get away from the busy atmosphere around it, but I wouldn’t go out of your way to get there.
